The Tangaroa Orbital Propellant Depot (commonly known as simply "Tangaroa Station") was a private space station by Ranginui Aerospace located in Low Earth Orbit. It operated throughout the 2000s and served primarily as a medium-sized refueling platform. It was also equipped with a science module which could support a variety of experiments offered for free to universities from developing countries.
Ranginui Aerospace was founded in 1992 by a group of engineers from the Culham Science Centre, Oxfordshire, with the goal of making Low Earth Orbit activities more accessible and affordable by focusing on reusable off-the-shelf technology. During its years of operation, the company offered low-cost launches and in-orbit refueling for small spacecraft.
In 2011, during the tumultuous corporate climate that dominated the space industry, Ranginui was absorbed by the OPDA oil and gas conglomerate, and Tangaroa Station was deorbited into Earth's atmosphere.
